The announcement of two mental health PhD scholarships at Fiona Stanley Hospital today marked the beginning of research activities at the State’s newest public hospital.

Health Minister Dr Kim Hames launched the Warren Jones Institute for Community Health and Medical Research, which is located in Fiona Stanley Hospital’s research building.

The Institute was established as a joint endeavour with Fiona Stanley Hospital to raise funds and provide financial support to medical research, scholarships, research education and visiting fellowships and orators at FSH. It will also undertake research of its own and contribute to further education and professional development for clinicians and researchers.

As well as raising funds to support clinical research that will directly benefit the local community, the Institute will also provide a significant benefit to the wider Western Australian population, through its epidemiological research into health and disease in the community, which will be used to inform public health initiatives for current and future generations.

The first two PhD scholarships to be supported by the WJI will be in youth mental health and perinatal mental health. Fiona Stanley Hospital’s mental health service will feature a dedicated youth mental health unit and mother and baby unit, and the WJI will now begin working closely with the university sector to facilitate research that will deliver further advances in these key areas.

As an independent registered health promotion charity, the WJI will provide an avenue for individuals and the private sector to donate to FSH research activities via a charitable body that is independent of government. Donations can be made by emailing the Warren Jones Institute for Community Health and Medical Research.
