Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine

The department of Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine provides 24-hour, comprehensive anaesthetic services across both Fiona Stanley Hospital and Fremantle Hospital (external site).

Our anaesthetists provide safe and effective general, regional or local anaesthesia and sedation for patients undergoing surgery and other procedures.

Anaesthetists are also trained to provide pain management for patients who are recovering from surgery and for pregnant women in labour. Read more about anaesthesia (Healthy WA) and anaesthetics for children (Healthy WA).

We perform over 30,000 procedures per year for adult and paediatric patients who require:

  • emergency and elective surgical, diagnostic or therapeutic procedures
  • obstetric services
  • acute pain management
  • perioperative medical assessment and support
  • resuscitation and crisis management.

We also provide specialist pain medicine outpatient services for patients with chronic pain conditions.

Education and research

We are committed to delivering and promoting excellence in patient care and safety, providing access to high quality training, education, research opportunities and leadership for all clinical staff.

Education is a core activity, with weekly departmental education, registrar tutorial, and primary and fellowship exam-preparation sessions. These are complimented by skills-focused simulation scenarios and participation in hospital-wide multidisciplinary training in medical emergency and trauma response. Our department is accredited for fellowship training with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).

Our Research Unit collaborates on several national multicentre trials as well coordinating local trials and audits.  Our anaesthetists and trainees are encouraged to participate in ongoing research activities and to develop their own projects, in a supportive and nurturing research environment.

Fellowship opportunities

The department has a number of subspecialty anaesthetic fellowship positions available each year which are open to local and international candidates at the end of their training program. Read more fellowship opportunities.
