A project to create an innovative à la carte patient dining experience offering tasty hospital meals suited to therapeutic, allergy and cultural dietary needs, has been applauded at the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) Excellence Awards (external link).

The Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) ‘My Choice’ Fixed Menu and Allergy Mapping Project won the Excellence in Improving the Patient Experience award.

In what is thought to be an Australian first, support services and clinical staff mapped over 150 food allergies and consulted with patients, visitors, staff and consumer advisory groups on menu concepts and meal options.

FSH Patient Catering and Dietetics Senior Dietitian, Bianca Guthrie, said My Choice improved meal choice, patient satisfaction and safety, particularly for those on restrictive therapeutic diets such as gluten free and renal, and preference diets like vegetarian and vegan.

“We are really proud that My Choice has been so well received by patients and staff,” Bianca said

“This project benefits every FSH inpatient, particularly those on special diets or with food allergies, but importantly also reduces kitchen waste,”

Bianca also thanked the catering and dietetics teams for their passion and drive throughout this pioneering project.

“This project was a huge team effort and demonstrates the success of clinical and support services working together,” Bianca said.

FSH Production Kitchen Manager Dave Dymond echoed Bianca’s sentiments on the value of teamwork.

“This project demonstrates the true impact of collaboration across disciplines and recognises the valuable role our support services play in improving the patient experience,” Dave said.

SMHS Chief Executive Paul Forden said ‘My Choice’ was a deserving winner.

“Congratulations to our Patient Catering and Dietetics teams for their collaborative efforts in improving patient choice, satisfaction and safety,” Paul said.

The SMHS Excellence Awards celebrate high-achieving staff across Fiona Stanley, Fremantle, Rockingham General and Murray District hospitals who exemplify the SMHS core values of Care, Integrity, Respect, Excellence and Teamwork in their care and service each and every day.
