Like many others, Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Head of Department - Dietetics Jane Porter’s goal was simple – give up alcohol for one month to raise money for Dry July.

To her surprise, Jane raised more than $1,770 – the most raised by an individual at FSH this year. Other fantastic efforts included the FSH Cancer Centre that raised $1,736 and Health Promotion Officer Alexa Whitehorn with $261.

Jane said the donations and support she received while completing the challenge were amazing.

“I set a target of $1,000 and nearly doubled it,” Jane said.

A personal connection with cancer motivated Jane to take part in the challenge.

“I lost my younger brother to bowel cancer when he was 24 years old. Several family members, including my mum, have also had cancer diagnoses in the past few years,” Jane said.

“As my own alcohol intake had slowly started creeping up I thought it was a good time to reset and raise money whilst I was at it.”

Instead of having a wine with dinner, Jane swapped it for exercise.

Jane is happy she took part in the challenge and will encourage her partner to join her next year.

Well done to everyone who took part in Dry July! Funds raised will go towards cancer support organisations across Australia to help improve patient comfort, care and wellbeing.
