Rottnest Island Nursing Post
We provide emergency and primary healthcare services to Rottnest Island residents and visitors. Our dedicated team includes a nurse practitioner/clinical nurse manager, two clinical nurses and an administration assistant. The nursing team is supported by a doctor over the busy summer period and during winter school holiday weekends. During other peak periods Rottnest Island Nursing Post receives additional medical support from Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department Consultants. We can also call in additional registered nurses and enrolled nurses to assist when required.
Our nurses have extensive knowledge and skills in advanced assessment, diagnosis, nursing care and evaluation. The Nursing Post is equipped to offer Advanced Life Support (ALS) and all registered nurses are ALS competent.
We use a specially-equipped ambulance to retrieve patients when necessary and patients who need advanced ongoing care are transferred to mainland tertiary hospitals.
We work closely with the Rottnest Island Authority, WA Police and the Fire and Emergency Services Authority to provide coordinated emergency responses.
We also provide support services such as x-ray, pathology testing and limited medication supplies.
Visitors to the island are encouraged to bring adequate supplies of their own prescription medications and a small first aid kit. The local Wellness Centre provides a pharmacy service for island visitors.
Treatment charges apply for those who do not have a valid Medicare card or international visitors whose home country does not have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia. Charges also apply for some medications.
We encourage you to be actively involved in all aspects of your healthcare and invite you to read the Patient First booklet found throughout Fremantle Hospital.

Due to its isolation, the Nursing Post has limited material resources and patients requiring dressings should be advised to bring adequate supplies for the duration of their stay.
Enquiries about patient referrals should be made to the Clinical Nurse Manager, accompanied by a detailed written referral.
